And the game could certainly be modified to keep a track of such things and so preserve the state of each world when you leave the world. Other than that, I don't see any potential problem at all in the game keeping track of what items had been collected. Back in 1998, EEPROM memory was very expensive, and so the more used, the higher the cost to Rare, who then would either have had to accept less profit for every copy of the game sold, or else Rare would have to have raised the price of the game, which would have resulted in less copies of the game being sold, so again less profit being made. Whether you're won over by the game's cartoon-like charm, the open worlds, or the vast vehicle customization, Nuts & Bolts will certainly be worth the low $40 price tag it will wear when it launches later this year.I think the only way it could have been classed as a technical limitation would have been if, at the time, the amount of game save EEPROM required would have been larger than the amount Rare wanted to include in the cartridge. Few people will pick up the game and not find something to like. The draw-distance seems to go on for miles, and everything has a nice glossiness to it that compliments the cartoony art style.īanjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is really a bridge between the hardcore gamer and the casual one. When you jump out of your vehicle and hop on foot, the scale of the worlds proves immense. Deep reds, bright greens, and shiny yellows fill the screen as though the game were a child-like dream. Much like Viva Piñata, the use of color in Banjo-Kazooie really stands out. The vehicles and the worlds themselves are extremely pretty. These crashes will likely be the star of the videos produced by the game, which I was told includes a replay function not totally dissimilar to that in Halo 3 as players will be able to capture and share replays online. Apparently vehicles can be rendered useless if too many important bits fall off, at which point they'll have to be manually repaired. More than once I did crash into objects, though, and pieces of the vehicle went flying off that I had to quickly recollect. Getting high above the level makes spotting Jiggies and other secrets extremely easy. The flying feels great, though, and it's easy to control the vehicle. AdvertisementĬontrol of the vehicles is fairly straightforward, but the game has a bit of a floaty feel to it when you're on wheels or in the sky vehicles are easily toppled over and can be manipulated easily in mid-air. Popping into the workshop mode-which is nearly identical to the Gummy Ship editor in Kingdom Hearts-I was then able to add wings and jet engines to my vehicle which let me conquer the challenge with ease. It worked okay for the first couple, but after a while I figured it better to try it with a plane. I initially tried to make use of the car's spring-loaded jumping device to shoot myself up in the air.

At first, I tried to conquer the objective using the vehicle provided near the mission point-pre-made vehicles are strewn about the worlds, but you're free to use your own as well. One of the challenges I tried earlier on required me to navigate through some floating rings in the air. Engines, armor, wheels, wings, fins, floaters, and more can be equipped onto your vehicle in order to give you access to various areas of the large worlds. As you progress through the game and collect Jiggies, you'll find more pieces for upgrading vehicles. These game play challenges are completely non-linear, and can be completed on foot or with the aid of the vehicles how you tackle a given challenge is up to you.

Within each is a series of challenges which, when completed, award Jiggies. Within Showdown Town are five huge areas that constitute the game's levels.
The main goal of the game is to hunt down and collect "Jiggies," small puzzle pieces held by the various inhabitants of Showdown Town. Luckily, I had the chance to do all of that and more during my hands-on time with the game at X'08 yesterday. Some will become absorbed with the hunt for rare vehicles pieces as they quest for the raddest ride around, while others will get lost exploring the massive, open levels in the game.
As the big middle-of-the-road title in the Xbox 360 holiday line-up, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is going to be a game that means different things for different people.
